Traditional Home Designs
Two story living space is more cost effective per-square-foot to build due to a smaller footprint (less roof and foundation). Keep in mind that staircases and hallways are living space too, and the openness of a single story central living space can be hard to replicate in a two story.
THE ST. ELIAS

The St. Elias packs a lot of house into a small package, making it ideal as a starter house or for a large family on a budget. The first story has an elevated entry and coat closet, large family room, large kitchen open to the nook, and a half bath attached to the mudroom/laundry from the garage.
The split staircase leading to the second story turns one way to a large bonus room/upstairs living room/bedroom. The other half of the secon story has two additional bedrooms, a hall bath, and a master suite with a walk-in closet, jetted tub, separate tiled shower and dual vanities.
